EuroVision

So last night I got a lesson in European pop culture. I was babysitting Ryan for the evening and after he went to bed I decided to pop in a dvd. After my movie was over I was flipping through the channels and noticed that there was this particular program on about 5 different stations that looked like some kind of singing contest. Andrea and Urs came home a few minutes later and informed me that this was the annual EuroVision contest. Apparantly this is a huge deal in Europe. Personally it reminded me a bit of American Idol for different countries. In any case it has been around since the 50's. This year's winner was this girl from Germany, and I can only say she has the strangest English accent I've ever heard. It's like this cockney British thing going on. Because I can't describe it you can listen for yourself.

But anyway, apparantly this contest has launched some major careers, the most prominent being ABBA in 1974 with their song Waterloo. I also saw that Celine Dion won for Switzerland (which I found weird because isn't she Canadian?) in 1988. So if you'd like to find out more about this European pop culture phenomenon follow this link courtesy of Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_Song_Contest.
